SUMMARY:PFAS and Firefighting A Free Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Firefighting foam (AFFF) is the main source of PFAS contamination on the West Plains\, the focus of WA Ecology’s Airport Investigation and EPA’s Superfund cleanup at Fairchild Air Force Base. \nThis meeting will explore and explain AFFF\, including: \n\nTraining\nStorage and containment\nOverhead fire suppression systems in hangers\nUS Forest Service practices\nPlane crashes at Fairchild and Spokane Airport\nPFAS investigations in other local Fire Districts\nWaterproof fabric in protective gear\nPFAS-related illnesses in fire fighters\n\nGuest speakers to be announced \nOur PFAS groundwater contamination from AFFF is not the fault of fire fighters. They’re health victims\, too. Fire fighters have been routinely exposed during active fire fighting\, equipment malfunctions\, training\, and replenishment\, and by PFAS in their protective clothing. \nThe International Association of Fire Fighters trains and advocates safety protection for firefighters\, and sponsors scientific research about workplace hazards.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Recruiting into the New Home Filters Study
DESCRIPTION:Attend a Workshop to learn more\nand meet Dr. Mulhern online \nSaturday Feb 7\,  4-5:00\nHilton Garden Inn\, 9015 W Highway 2\, Airway Heights \nWe are excited to share that a new research study will help West Plains families confirm that home water filters remove PFAS and other fluorinated chemicals from household water. \nThis study—led by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder\, in partnership with West Plains Water Coalition and the Washington State Department of Health—will test both existing home filters and newly installed systems. The goal is to provide clear\, trustworthy information about filters that impacted households can use to protect their drinking water. \nParticipants will receive their own test results\, helping academics and policy-makers build knowledge that will support families across our community and nationwide. \nRiley is the nation’s lead researcher in home PFAS filters.  After his talk here in 2024 (watch on YouTube)\, it was clear that his experience could aid our neighborhood.  Here’s his essay about that West Plains visit.\nThis research project begins easily for him\, and for his research funder\, because of the neighborhood community acquaintance you’ve helped us build.  \nFrom the start\, we’ve imagined that what we learn here might help people in other PFAS communities.  Thanks for your part!
