The Problem
Groundwater polluted by PFAS “forever chemicals” is a serious problem in Spokane’s West Plains. Like many communities near air bases and airports, the West Plains has groundwater severely polluted by PFAS-laden firefighting foam. However, few other bases and airports have so many nearby neighbors dependent on private wells. According to at least one national study, this is the worst PFAS contamination problem in the United States.
